Tales of a True Southern Child

It is football season in the south and here we are right in the heart of it in Auburn, AL.  As graduates of Auburn University, we, most definitely, have raised our girls to speak the language.  War Eagle is as important as "yes ma'am" and "no ma'am" and Roll Tide is a VERY bad word!  These are the only two football teams Mary Margo has ever know and Friday night proved it!

Friday night we headed out to our first high school game. Mary Margo had the opportunity to cheer with the cheerleaders during pregame. She had a great time cheering a little and starring at the crowd most of the time. I mean, blank stare slowly moving her head from one side of the stands to the other then back again with her mouth wide open. She looked like we had just dropped her on Mars. She had no idea what was going on.

After pregame, I gathered here from the field and we made our way to the stands.  Once in our seat, we sent daddy for snacks and she continued to take it all in from this view point.
Then the question "Are we watching Alabama?". I respond with a "what?" and she repeats herself.  With that, I realize this child has no idea there is any other team besides Auburn and Alabama.  That is all she knows. All she has ever heard.

It made me laugh out loud!   Made me realize that if I do nothing else right in my parenting career, I did a great job teaching my Alabama born southern child the two most important teams in football.  So well, in fact, she has no idea there are 100's of teams in this state alone.

I explained where we were and what teams were playing. Now she knows about high school football. Someone asked me if I was going to turn the TV on  Sunday and introduce her to NFL too. That might be a little too much for one weekend. We will leave that job for uncle Charlie.

For Do-Daddy

When Do Daddy is away, this little cowgirl still has to play!

Do Daddy was away on a weekend wagon ride with Champ last time we visited.  So Nana was left to take care of Maggie.  That is until, Mary Margo could get there and take over the duties.

Mary Margo LOVES these horses.  She is not one bit afraid of them and from the looks of things that day, she has listened to every word of instruction that has come out of Do Daddy's mouth about taking care of them.

She showed me every little detail about feeding Maggie.  Where to put the bucket of feed, how many scoops she got, how to hold the carrot, where to stand, how to open the barn door, where her bridle was stored, what closet the saddles were in, EVERYTHING!

Little Cowgirl!
Side note - this Vintage Alabama tee was mine.  Mountain Music Tour '83!
We found it earlier that morning and she wanted to wear it.
I LOVE IT!

"MAGGIE, GET IN THE PASTURE!"
Do Daddy has even taught Maggie to take instruction from the budding 5 year old cowgirl!  Maggie listened very well.

Once Maggie was out of the barn, Mary Margo insisted that we clean the barn because "Do Daddy doesn't like a messy barn.  He likes a CLEAN barn."  So true!

These videos may be a little boring to you but they are priceless and especially for Do Daddy!

Another First for the First Born

Mary Margo got her first "big girl" bicycle for her birthday from Dusty and I.  She has been so excited about this brand new shiny purple bike...the "lil-honey".  (Yes that is the name of it.)
 She beamed with pride!

On Thursday, we set out to put the first few miles on the bright white tires.

Here she goes for the first of millions of trips down this sidewalk.  She was so cautious and steady.  She told me all the instructions the guy at the bike shop told her.  *You push your pedals back to break.  *If I tilt this way this wheel will catch me and if I tilt that way that wheel will catch me.  These are called training wheels.  *I have to be safe on my bike.  *I have to park it in a safe place when I am not riding it.

Making some laps around the pavilion
She told me she was in a race and she was winning and when she dings her bell "ring ring"  we, me and Dottie, are suppose to cheer for her.

She got the hang of it and eventually picked up some speed.  I then challenged her to go down the hill. She did fantastic!  There was a brief moment of panic but then she pushed the pedals back and stopped without falling off.  I praised her for doing the right thing and not being scared.  Then she took off again.  This time didn't end quiet as good at the first.  She got to going too fast and instead of breaking she ran it off the sidewalk and into the mulch.  No falls.  Yippee!  She was a little shaken by the off road coarse but jumped back on and continued down her path of "big-girlhood"

We made it down another hill, across the street, and almost home.   I mean oh so close to home.  See the driveway behind her.  Yep, that is ours.  3 more cycles of the pedals and she would have been home.  Home with not a scratch on her.  Not one "boo boo" until she reached the neighbors driveway.  It slopes ever so slightly like most dives do as they meet the roadway.  She lost her balance and she was down.  Down for the count.  The bicycle told her who was boss and the sidewalk bit her on the knee.  And like any good sympathetic mother in this day in age of blogging and recording everything, I watched in slow motion as it happened then grabbed my camera!  (Bad Mom)

We can chalk that up as the first scraped knee at the hands of the "lil-honey" purple bicycle

Big girls and 5 year olds don't cry.
They dust it off, get up, and get back on, right?

My side notes - as Mary Margo pedaled down the sidewalk for the first time I couldn't help but be her mom about it.  I worried she would fall over or she would get hurt.  With every twitch and sway of the training wheels my heart jumped a little inside my chest and my muscles tensed.  You know, the "momma bird" instinct.  You want to protect them.  Keep them close.

I have been marking milestones with this child since before she was born.  Since I first found out I was pregnant with her.  And I will continue to because she is my first born.  Everything with her is a first for her and a first for me too.  With every milestone, she grows a little more, maybe gets hurt a little, and moves farther away from my safe little nest.  And I grow, too, as a mother

Dottie's milestones are marked too.  But they don't sting quit like the first time.  One day, I will watch Dottie take her first ride down the sidewalk on the same purple "lil honey".  But it won't be the same, my heart won't jump at every sway of the wheels.  Maybe because I have been here before and know that she will be fine or maybe because Mary Margo will be right beside her cheering her and protecting her from the sidewalk like only a big sister can do.  Who knows?  Or maybe, it won't sting like the first time because, simply, I have grown.

We have a climber not a walker

Mary Margo has got a lot of blog time this past month.  I am past due for a Dottie update.

Dottie has been having the time of her little life!  She is free!  Free of big sister's constant control over her.  Free to explore and play alone.  Free to crawl wherever she wants.  Free to walk all by herself without assistance.  But instead, she prefers to climb.

Climb on the chairs, into boxes, under the piano, over the guitar cases, into rocking chairs...and rock..while standing.  She climbs out of the high chair onto her tray, onto the table.
She even came home on the first day of nursery school with a scratch on her head.  Why?  Oh, because she climbed her way over the walls of the little house instead of using the door.  Was I shocked or surprised?  Absolutely not.

She has kept me and Dusty on our toes the last few weeks.  She is fast!  You look away for a split second and she is either out of site or moving on up!  UP UP UP that is the only direction she likes to go.  She did start walking a little bit this weekend.  With lots of cheers and coaxing.  She is on her way for sure.  It won't be long, she will be running along side Mary Margo.

On the chair, one of her favorite places to climb

On the table

Under the piano and on top of the guitar cases

In the box.  Really wish I could have caught a pic of her climbing in.  It was priceless.

Pretending to be an elephant at the circus

Stuck!  Her left leg was stuck.  She couldn't move.

Stopping for a quick snack

In the chair, again, making her way to the table and laughing about it the whole time.

Just rocking!

She did have her 15 month check up on August 24th.
She is healthy and as HAPPY as one little girl can be!
She weighed in at 23lbs and 30.2 in in length

She has arrived at FIVE

For months Mary Margo has referred to being 5 as some sort of turning point in her life. For instance, she says "I will eat that when I am 5" or "when I am 5, I can carry Dottie" or "when I am 5, I will be as tall as you Mommy"

Well, she has Arrived at the BIG 'OL AGE of 5!
She still doesn't eat things, she carried Dottie around at 4 and she did not grow as tall as me overnight.  Oh well, we've got a whole year to work on all that!

Mary Margo started her birthday celebration with a ride in Papa Joe's boat.  It was a fun way to party with the family and celebrate!

Nana made her Barbie Princess cake.  Mary Margo loved it and we all enjoyed eating it!  It was delicious!

Dottie found this ride boring and very uncomfortable

Papa Joe and The Captain

Instead of a party with all our friends, we invited Mary Margo's very special friend, Francie over for our very first sleep over!  These girls were so SO EXCITED.  They talked about it all week prior to the big night counting down the days.

We ran and played outside

We painted toenails...even Dottie's

The girls slept in the tent

Jamming out super early in the morning

Muffin cake for birthday breakfast!

Dusty took this picture
Later as we flipped through them he said "she looks so old"
(It was a sweet Daddy moment)

Fast and Furious

A quick trip to the pool to finish off all the festivities!
